Vatnajökull glacier We start our journey by driving to the domestic airport in Reykjavík and boarding our private helicopter. We will fly from Reykjavík eastbound over some of the most visited areas of the country. Our first stop will be at Lakagígar, an old volcanic fissure in Skaftafell national park in the south of Iceland. An eruption from this old volcano in 1783 is said to have been a major influence in starting the French revolution. Here we will explore lava caves formed in the eruptions. From Lakagígar we will fly along the south coast to Jökullsárlón, a lagoon made from a mixture of seawater and water from the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull, which icy tongue reaches into the lagoon. We will take a boat trip on the lagoon amongst the floating icebergs and absorb the magnificent surroundings. This is the perfect location for a nice lunch. From the lagoon the helicopter will fly us north onto Vatnajökull glacier, Europe’s largest glacier. This will be our destination for the night, as we will overnight in a camp on top of the glacier. Before we turn into our tents for the night we will have dinner and swap stories of our experience during the day while enjoying a night-cap.

Day 3 – Ice cave and hot waterfall

We will use this morning to explore the glacier further, both by foot and by Super Jeeps which will be located at the camp site. During our stay we will explore the largest ice-cave in the world, not to mention a hot waterfall at the edge of the glacier where we can even take a bath. We will have lunch on the way, prepared by our chef and set up in a beautiful spot somewhere out in the nature. After this glacier adventure we will continue our trip north, crossing the magnificent Icelandic highland in our private helicopter. Our next destination is Lake Mývatn, Iceland’s fourth largest lake located in a highly geothermal area. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. We will enjoy a relaxing bath in the hot lagoon at the Mývatn nature baths and perhaps a massage. We will have dinner and stay overnight at a local hotel.

Day 4 – Lake Mývatn

Whale watching – Beyond the arctic circle After breakfast at the hotel we will jump into jeeps which are waiting outside the hotel. We will use this morning to go sightseeing around the Mývatn area, the Krafla volcano and Goðafoss waterfall. We will continue our journey north to Húsavík where we will go for a tour onboard a whalewatching boat and visit the local whale museum. The waters around Iceland are feeding grounds for many whale species, so if you are lucky you might see more than one species on the tour. We will have lunch aboard the boat. From Húsavík we will take a plane to Grímsey Island, a 5,2 km2 island located on the Arctic circle (66°N) about 41km from the mainland. The island is known as a great sanctuary for seabirds and for its fishermen. The island populates about 100 friendly people who will reward you with a diploma for crossing the Arctic circle, before you leave their island. From Grimsey island we will fly back to Reykjavík city, arriving at our hotel early evening. Dinner in the down-town area and maybe take a look at the colorful weekend nightlife in Reykjavík.
